Common cardiac surgery procedures include:
- Coronary Artery Bypass- Used to treat coronary artery disease using bypass surgery.
- Cardiac Valve Replacement and/or Repair- Replacement is used to replace a diseased heart valve if it cannot be repaired. However, a repair of a valve that is too narrow or won't close properly may be done if deemed possible.
-
Repair of an Atrial or Ventricular Septal Defect- Atrial repair is used when the tissue (atrial septum) between the two atria of the heart isn't closed completely. Ventricular repair is done to repair defects in the muscle wall between the two lower pumping ventricular chambers.
-
Implant of a Permanent Pacemaker- Done if the sinoatrial node or sinus node of the heart is defective and involves implanting a pacemaker that will send the electric impulses the heart needs to help it pump properly.
- Implant of a Permanent Cardiac Defibrillator- Used to assist the rhythm of the heart rate using small jolts of electricity by implanting a defibrillator.
- Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization (TMR)- A procedure done to revascularize the heart using a high-powered, computer-synchronized laser. This will place channels into oxygen-deprived heart muscle.
- Repair of Complex Cardiac and Aortic Aneurysms- Done to repair aneurysms via open surgery.
- Resection of Cardiac Tumors- Used to treat tumors of the heart by removal.
- Pericardial Resection, Biopsy, and Window- When the pericardium (the protective lining surrounding the heart) becomes inflamed, a condition called pericarditis results. Pericardial surgery can remove this lining.
